Today is a day that is seared in many an American mind.

I was in 8th grade, US History class. My teacher always left the news on while we settled in. An announcement came on over the loudspeaker instructing teachers to turn off all television, internet and radio broadcasts.

Mr. Musfeldt did not abide by this request.

He turned up the TV.

He looked at our class and said, “You are all at an age where you can handle what is happening. You are all Americans and you have a right to know what is going on…who am I to stand in your way?”

We sat there in shock as we saw the devastation. No one said a word. The whole school was eerily quiet as if silenced by the horrors on the screen.

I’ve always appreciated the irony of being in a US History class during such a historic US event.

And I’ve always thanked Mr. Musfeldt for not taking that away from us.

9/11/01- To the brave men and women who lost their lives, to the poor souls in the wrong place at the wrong time, to the families forever feeling the loss of this tragedy, we will never forget.

The land of the free and the home of the BRAVE.
