The Spoils of Summer

We live in an age of instant gratification: Facebook, smart phones, instant messanger, fast food, etc. Heck, these days it’s even rare for parents to wait until their child is born to find out the gender. Of course, the reason for this is because once the technology was available, human nature said gimme! Gimme! We’ve all been there. I love that I can buy a book on my Nook and be reading it in a few minutes. But sometimes waiting makes it even better. For example, Indiana sweet corn is the BEST. Seriously, you’ve never had corn so sweet (unless you happen to live in Indiana). But it doesn’t get flown in from warm weather climates in the dead of winter so you can eat it whenever you get a craving. You have to wait until mid August when the corn is harvested and at its peak.

Well, today is September 1st, which means that despite today’s 92 degree temperature, Fall is upon us. There are lots of produce items that are at their peak in the Fall, but summer fruits and veggies are some of my absolute favorite. So I’m on a mission to enjoy as much summer related food as possible while it’s still readily available. At the top of my list is a delicious salad I recently discovered:

That’s arugula, watermelon, and feta cheese. And it’s SO good. I didn’t come up with this salad on my own, I read about it on one of the blogs I follow, Peanut Butter Fingers. I thought it sounded intriguing and wanted to try it. Then I mentioned the combination to my mom and she immediately said she’d made it several times and really liked it. So then I knew I really had to try it. I just wish I’d tried it sooner! I plan to eat my body weight in watermelon and this salad until it disappears from the grocery store.

Did I mention it was 92 degrees here today? BLECH. So on the way home from class today, I decided to stop at a self-serve fro yo place because it was on the way home (okay, so I took a route that made it on the way home). This place opened while I was in DC and I’m guessing it will close for the winter, so I’ve been enjoying it (on a limited basis) while I can. they rotate certain flavors and I was disappointed to see that red velvet was gone, so I couldn’t have my favorite combo, red velvet + cake batter. But my back up option was pretty darn good. Cake batter and blueberry swirl with fresh blueberries on top. It was so good and refreshing. I don’t have a picture because I got it to go and I didn’t think to take a picture until I got home. By then it had melted quite a bit and was not very photogenic. Haha. You’ll just have to use your imagination.

The moral of the story is, instant gratification-like self serve fro-yo-is best in small quantities. So enjoy all the fresh fruits and veggies and soak up these last rays of summer.

XO,

V

On the menu

I’ve got 3 things I’m making this week/weekend. There will probably be more but these 3 are 100% going to happen!

1. Mahi Mahi: Tonight’s dinner. It’s been lurking in the freezer for weeks now. (wow, if that doesn’t sound fresh…) I have no formal recipe that I will be following…basically winging it, as is my standard method in the kitchen.

2. Cinnamon Rolls: Yum. A treat for my Military Man, cause I luuuuurve him. A variation of a standard recipe.

3. French Toast: Again, for my Military Man. Another improvised recipe.

So now you know what’s coming up on the menu! I will be back tonight with the Mahi Mahi recipe.

Why Am I Telling You What to Wear?

Okay, so I’m not really going to tell anyone what to wear, that’s not what this blog is about. But it got your attention, didn’t it? Fashion is an extremely personal thing. What’s considered “haute couture” to some may seem absurd to others. So, with the exception of someone dressing entirely inappropriately for certain settings (i.e. church, work), I have a “to each their own” philosophy when it comes to what other people are wearing.  Yet here I am, writing a fashion column for my blog. So what is my goal other than to see my brilliant thoughts on the internet?

I’ve always loved clothes and fashion. I’m a girly girl through and through, and a love of clothes usually goes along with that. But I am by no means a fashion expert. A year ago, if I saw a cute black dress I liked, I’d buy the dress and wear just that. I wore jewelry, of course, but I didn’t really know how to accessorize beyond that. Scarves, belts, etc completely overwhelmed me. So I’ve been trying to work on that. Accessorizing can make a basic outfit like jeans and a t-shirt much more interesting. It can also make a limited wardrobe seem much larger because switching up accessories can make one outfit look like several. Since most of us aren’t celebrities with limitless shopping funds, this is a great skill to have.

Some of you may now be saying, “But Vanessa, fashion is all about outward appearance. Isn’t that kind of shallow?”

Of course there are more important things in life than what you’re wearing. But the fact is, humans make judgments based on appearance and bad first impressions are very hard to overcome. To say you’re not going to worry at all about the image you project to others because the outside shouldn’t matter is just naïve. There are a lot of great things about a person that someone else isn’t going to know when first meeting them. But your outward appearance is a way to control the image you project to others.

So that’s why I’m blogging about fashion. I’m still learning, but I can pass on what I know so far to others out there who are learning as well. I’m a real girl, on a real budget. And as my dad likes to say, I’m also not an “off the rack kind of girl.” I’m 5’2 ½, which is really short, and on top of that I have disproportionately short legs. My butt, according to my best friend, was meant for a black girl, and I will never have six pack abs. If I can manage to dress in a way that flatters my body and look like I spent more than I did, anyone can!

I hope you enjoy this column!
